Maxillary Skeletal Expansion (MSE) in Torquay

person with jaw painDo you have a misaligned bite that’s causing discomfort or pain in your teeth, jaw joints, and muscles? Are you looking for an alternative to costly and invasive jaw surgery? If so, Maxillary Skeletal Expansion (MSE) may be the solution for you.

These highly effective orthodontic appliances widen the upper jaw to match the lower jaw size to provide optimal occlusion and a healthy alignment for permanent teeth.

What Is MSE & How Does It Work?

MSE at Torquay Smiles is a minimally invasive alternative to jaw surgery developed by Dr Won Moon (Dentist), an orthodontist specialist. The process involves anchoring the expanders into the jaw, using micro implants/screws, which slowly expands the jaw over weeks and months into the correct position to correct the bite.

To place the device, four temporary micro screws are implanted into the roof of the mouth. The expansion device is then placed in the middle. The patient will “activate” the device by inserting a special key into the centre, and turning it (once or twice a day, depending on your personalised plan).

Once MSE treatment is complete, it’s normal for the teeth to spread out a bit and create a gap, as the jaw is wider and can accommodate all your teeth when straightened out. A full treatment of braces, or Invisalign aligners, typically follows MSE treatment to straighten the teeth and perfect the smile.

Will It Hurt?

Each time the device is activated, it will expand slightly, which also expands the jaw bone. Expansion is gradual and does not hurt our patients, but you may feel a slight tingling sensation around your nose when you activate the device. After a few minutes, this feeling should go away!

MSE offers several benefits, including avoiding costly and invasive surgeries where the jaw is broken and needs to heal back. MSE is ideal for people whose back teeth are cracking from the pressure of a misaligned bite or other jaw and bite issues that cause pain and discomfort in their teeth and jaw muscles.

The duration of MSE care depends on age, severity of the case, and bone density. Most people require 3 to 12 months under care, similar to jaw surgery, without the risks and lengthy time off work associated with breaking and resetting the jaw. Based on the severity of your condition, you may be in active treatment with the MSE appliance for a month, then another six months or so may be necessary to achieve the desired outcome.

If you’re interested in finding out whether MSE is right for you, we suggest starting with some X-rays and a consultation. If you have existing X-rays, please bring them with you. Dr Mohammed Al-Saeed (Dentist) has undergone full training with Dr Won Moon (Dentist) and is skilled in its application. He will assess whether this option is a good fit for you.
